GPSR for WooCommerce: What Your Product Pages Need

Since December 2024 the GPSR asks for the manufacturer, an EU contact, product ID and safety warnings on product pages. What it means for WooCommerce stores.

GPSR for WooCommerce: What Your Product Pages Need

Since 13 December 2024, every online shop that sells consumer products to people in the EU has to show product safety information on its product pages. The rule comes from the General Product Safety Regulation, usually shortened to GPSR. This guide explains what the GPSR asks of a WooCommerce store, which details belong on each product page, and how to add them to hundreds of products without editing each one by hand.

What is the GPSR?

The General Product Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/988, replaced the old General Product Safety Directive. It sets safety rules for non-food consumer products sold in the EU, and it gives online sales special attention: a shopper buying online should see the same key safety information they would find on the box in a physical shop.

Because it is a regulation and not a directive, it applies directly in every EU country from the same date. National authorities enforce it and set the penalties.

Does it apply to my store?

Most likely yes if you sell physical consumer products to people in the EU. That includes stores based outside the EU that ship to EU customers. Some product groups, such as food, medicines and antiques, are covered by other rules, and products with their own EU safety laws (toys, cosmetics, electrical equipment) still follow the GPSR for anything those laws do not cover.

Selling only services or digital downloads? Then the GPSR product page rules do not apply to you.

What has to be on each product page

For products offered online, the GPSR asks for this information to be shown clearly in the offer, before the customer buys:

  1. The manufacturer: name, registered trade name or trademark, and a postal and electronic address where they can be contacted.
  2. An EU responsible person, when the manufacturer is not established in the EU: their name, postal and electronic address. This is usually the importer, an authorised representative or a fulfilment service provider in the EU.
  3. Product identification: a picture of the product, its type, and any other identifier such as a model, batch or serial number.
  4. Warnings and safety information that must be shown on the product or its packaging, in a language consumers in the country of sale can easily understand.

Marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay already ask sellers for these fields. On your own WooCommerce store, showing them is your job.

Common mistakes

  • Only a brand name. A logo is not enough: the manufacturer needs a postal and an electronic address.
  • No EU contact for imported goods. Products made in China, the US or the UK need an EU responsible person on the page.
  • Warnings hidden in a PDF. Safety warnings should be readable on the page itself. Documents can be extra, not a replacement.
  • Variations forgotten. If sizes or colours have their own batch or model numbers, the page should update when the shopper picks one.
  • Information typed into every description. It works until a manufacturer changes address and you have 400 products to edit.

How to add GPSR information in WooCommerce

WooCommerce has a GTIN field and a SKU, but no place for manufacturers, EU responsible persons or safety warnings. Adding them to every description by hand is slow and hard to keep correct. A better setup follows three ideas:

Save each contact once

Create each manufacturer, EU responsible person and importer once, with all their details. Do the same for warnings you use on many products, such as “Not suitable for children under 3 years”. When a detail changes, you edit one record and every product updates.

Assign at the right level

Most stores have far fewer manufacturers than products. Assign a manufacturer to a brand or a category, set a shop default for your own products, and override on single products or variations only where needed. The most specific value wins: variation, product, brand, category, then shop default.

Find the gaps

With hundreds of products, the hard part is knowing which ones are still incomplete. A GPSR column and filter in the product list, plus a list of products missing data, turns compliance into a to-do list you can actually finish.

A practical checklist

  • List every manufacturer whose products you sell, with name, trade name, postal address and email or website.
  • For each manufacturer outside the EU, find the EU responsible person. Ask your supplier or importer if you are not sure.
  • Collect the warnings printed on each product’s packaging, translated for the countries you sell to.
  • Check that every product has a clear photo and a type or model, and batch numbers where the product carries them.
  • Show the information on the product page, then check a few products as a shopper would see them.
  • Repeat for new products before they go live.

Do it with GPSR Compliance for WooCommerce

GPSR Compliance for WooCommerce follows the setup above. The free version lets you:

  • Save manufacturers, EU responsible persons, importers and shared warnings once.
  • Assign them to products, variations, brands, categories or the whole shop, with bulk edit for many products at once.
  • Show the information in its own product tab, under the description or under the add to cart area, or with a block or shortcode.
  • Show product identification from your existing GTIN and SKU fields, plus model and batch numbers.
  • Find missing data with a product list column, a filter and an overview, and flag products made outside the EU that have no EU contact.
  • Import and export GPSR data with the WooCommerce product CSV tools.

The Pro add-on adds safety documents (declarations of conformity, manuals, certificates) with expiry checks, warning pictograms and starter texts, translations with WPML or Polylang, UK responsible person and UKCA marking, product recalls that email affected buyers by batch number, GPSR details in order emails and packing slips, a compliance report and blocking products with missing data from being published.

Frequently asked questions

I am the manufacturer. What do I show?

Your own business name, trade name and contact details as the manufacturer. If you are based outside the EU and sell to EU consumers, you also need an EU responsible person.

Can the information sit on a separate page?

The regulation asks for it to be shown in the offer, so the safest place is the product page itself, for example in a product tab or below the description.

Do I need this if I only sell in the UK?

The GPSR covers the EU and, under the Windsor Framework, Northern Ireland. Great Britain has its own product safety rules. If you ship to EU customers from the UK, the GPSR applies to those sales.

This guide is general information to help you organise product data, not legal advice. For questions about your specific products, check with your supplier, importer or a product safety professional.
